Celebrating Asian Canadians helps counter virus-related hate crimes
By Eva Zhu
For CWA Canada
In 2002, the federal government signed a declaration that designated May as Asian Heritage Month, with the goal of giving citizens an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Asian Canadians and their contributions to helping make this a better country.
This past year, however, has been particularly hard on Canada’s Asian population. The COVID-19 pandemic has not only put Asian people in the public eye in a negative light, but the number of anti-Asian hate crimes has increased exponentially.
Since the pandemic started, people have used the origin of the virus to justify and excuse racist anti-Asian sentiments and actions, including accusing them of bringing COVID-19 over from China. When the first cases started popping up in March 2020, an Asian person couldn’t cough or wear a mask without getting strange looks.
McMaster University graduate Diana Chu says she could sense people avoiding her when they noticed her wearing a mask early on during the pandemic.
“When I was out with a mask on, like on the bus or the grocery store, people would make an effort to distance from me in a way that was definitely more than necessary,” Chu says.

CBC Doc Mentorship Program spring deadline
CBC Radio’s Doc Mentorship Program has a spring deadline approaching.
Experienced audio freelancers are invited to submit a pitch to the program by May 7, 2021.
The program, which is also open to all CBC employees, is accepting applications for three different mentorships: the Doc Mentorship program, The Current’s Advanced Doc Maker program and the Emerging Indigenous Doc Maker program.
The program pairs up documentary makers with experienced CBC producers who provide guidance and mentorship through the process of making a radio documentary. Mentors are happy to provide feedback on pitches before the formal application process, so applicants are advised to contact the mentor they wish to work with before they apply.
You can find more details about the Doc Mentorship Program and how to apply, on the Doc Makers website. If you have any questions about the program, you can email docmentorships@cbc.ca.
And for information about CBC rates and contracts, check out this page on the CMG Freelance website.

The Born Freelancer Stays Focused
This series of posts by the Born Freelancer shares personal experiences and thoughts on issues relevant to freelancers. Have something to add to the conversation? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
One of the most frequent complaints I hear from non-freelancers during this pandemic is, “I just can’t stay focused on anything”.
Call it staying focused or living in the moment, it has always been one of the most important tools in a freelancer’s toolkit, pandemic or no pandemic.
I would posit the most successful freelancers have had to develop such skill sets in order to survive the sometimes volatile lifestyle their careers may generate.
Staying focused is a skill set that can be learned after repeated effort. The knack is to be aware of what it is you need to do and what is preventing you from doing it.
First, a few painful examples from my own steep learning curve.

Webinar: Beyond News Releases – Simple Steps to Effective Media Relations
CFG Guelph/Kitchener-Waterloo Presents:
Beyond News Releases – Simple Steps to Effective Media Relations
Presenter: Michael Strickland
Tuesday, April 13, 2021
7:00 – 7:45pm Eastern Time
“Truth is, media releases and pitches clog newsroom faxes and emails by the hundreds each and every day,” explains Michael Strickland. “Few ever generate the hoped-for headlines. Many get deleted based on little more than a failed subject line. Fortunately, there are simple things anyone can do to elevate their messaging above the noise.”
In this webinar, Michael will cover a few of the tactics and strategies that any communicator can adopt to get a specific announcement noticed and/or build long-term relationships with key media contacts. Some of these support a good news release, while others, such as opinion writing, an experts list, or editorial board meeting, offer effective alternatives. Most are scalable for any organization size or strategic objective.
About Michael Strickland
Michael Strickland, CFG founding member, is a writer/editor, strategic storyteller, and story coach. He began his career as a print and TV journalist, on the receiving end of too many failed releases. As the head of media relations at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo, he produced and distributed more than 1,500 headline-generating releases. Today, he freelances stories that capture his interest while at the same time helping others share their strategic stories.
This event has been organized by and for the members of CFG Guelph/Kitchener-Waterloo. To help raise funds for future programming, this Community is also offering attendance to CFG members and the general public for a small fee:
CFG members = $5
General Public = $25 (use the promo code CFG0413 to reduce the fee to $15)
You can register for this event right here. A link to the Zoom URL will be sent to you half an hour before the meeting. Check your spam or junk folders if you don’t receive the email with the URL.
Please log in ten minutes before 7pm ET so we can start promptly. You should have the latest version of the Zoom application downloaded to your computer ahead of time or use the Zoom webpage when prompted.
